Slurping Allowed

When my kids were little, we enrolled them to an etiquette class, as my wife and I feel that we cannot rely on ourselves to teach them the proper manners. Where I grew up, eating with your hands and having one leg up on a chair while dining is acceptable, which may be frowned upon in some other societies.

Speaking of table manners, people say that you should never drink directly from the bowl as it is poor etiquette, especially if you are in a restaurant. You should use the spoon. It is also said that slurping is not good either.

Yet in some countries and cultures, slurping food can be considered a compliment to the cook or to your host, as a sign that you are really enjoying the food. That makes sense to me.

Photo below is me slurping directly from the bowl. Let’s just say I’m showing my compliments for the good food.

(*photo taken during our last trip to the Philippines, at a restaurant in Manila; that is a bowl of delicious Halo-halo)
