Not-So Mass Invasion

On my last post, I featured Canadian geese that have migrated in our community by the hundreds this winter. When we passed by the pond the other day, most of those feathered visitors are gone. Perhaps they moved to somewhere more warm.

Today, I’ll show you some other temporary residents in our community. They are not flocking by the hundreds, but their herd seems to be more this year too.

Maybe it is because their habitat is shrinking with the continuous new housing developments cropping up around our area, decimating the farms, prairies and forested lands. They have no choice but to wander to our residential area.

Here they are hanging out near my driveway. Even though they poop on our lawn and eat our flowers, they are still welcome here. We’re not turning them into kaldereta, at least not today.

(*The native and most common deer in Iowa is the white-tailed deer. Known for their white-colored tail, they are found throughout our state in high numbers, often thriving in agricultural and woodland areas. Iowa is a top destination for hunting these deer, known for producing large bucks; kaldereta is a savory Filipino stew, traditionally with goat’s meat, but deer will be just fine: video taken by my wife.)
