Mass Invasion

Every winter our neighborhood accommodates some transient residents* from the north. Most of the time, it is a flock to a few flocks of visitors. But this year it is different. It is a mass migration. Perhaps a mass invasion? Probably the word was spread to all their kind that we are such a wonderful host.

The little pond in our subdivision is currently overcrowded with these migratory guests. They are a bunch of noisy neighbors. They trespass other’s property with total abandon plus they don’t clean up after themselves. Yet they are still welcome to stay in our community, and we have not filed complaints against them to the Home Owners Association.

Some of them would probably overstay until spring and even up to summer when they raise their little goslings near this pond.

That means come spring, when I’m out for my morning run, there would be a lot of “angry” winged creatures who will be chasing me as they will be acting territorial in protecting their little family when I pass through this area.

Putra-geese!

(*Canada geese spend time in Iowa during the winter, with many residing here year-round, while others from farther north arrive just for the winter. While some migrate further south, large numbers of “resident” geese remain in Iowa, especially near open water, urban areas, and available food sources.)
