The Hydrangeas of Jeju

We spent several days in Jeju during our last trip. Jeju is an island located south of the mainland South Korea. It is nicknamed as the “Hawaii of Korea,” as it features volcanic mountains, tropical flora, dramatic waterfalls, and scenic coastlines.

It is a popular destination for vacation and honeymoon, for both Koreans and international visitors. Though we did many activities in this island, what I want to feature in this post is the hydrangeas, which are all over this place.

One of the most visited site in the island is the Camellia Hill Botanical Garden. They have walkways and walls of hydrangeas which is a popular photo-op site for travel bloggers.

Below are photos from this garden:

Besides the cultivated flowers in the botanical garden, hydrangeas are also found almost everywhere. The island provides the perfect environment for them to thrive: a mild coastal climate, rich volcanic soil, and abundant summer rainfall.

From the side of the roads, growing wild…

They are also found in the lawn of both private homes, public buildings and shops. They are ubiquitous, definitely a hydrangea haven!

Not only are there different colors, they have different varieties too (look closely at the last photo above).

They are also used for decorations in restaurants and other establishments.

Here I am trying to smell them. Or maybe just burying my face in them, as I found out, they don’t have any fragrance at all. Though they definitely look pretty.

From Jeju,

Pinoytransplant.

  1. They’re definitely so lovely and colorful. When I was growing them in pots here, I learned that the color of the flowers depends on the ph of the soil so they grow in different colors. Ang ganda Doc.🍃🍂
